Nothing beats magazine stands in bookstores. Print isn’t dead! All these glossies are still alive and vibin’ with inspirational faces and #goals. This year, we were blessed with a myriad of beautiful, raunchy, and ~controversial~ covers that pretty much all #broketheinternet – if we gonna be real here. Let’s take a look!
Lena Dunham – Vogue February 2014

Homegirl kills it on the cover and even more so in the photo editorial that accompanies the cover story. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz and co-starring fellow Girls star Adam Driver, it was very reminiscent of the Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth editorial (also shot by Leibovitz) for Vogue June 2008, in which the two reprise their roles at Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big, respectively. In this case, Lena and Adam take on their now-iconinc Girls characters.
This cover was also topic of major controversy launched by Jezebel about Vogue, Photoshop, and the portrayal of Lena, etc., which Lena herself basically eye-rolled at—and we’ll leave it at that. The Internet can be soOOoo exhausting sometimes.
Emma Watson – Wonderland February/March 2014

Maybe one of the prettiest editorials ever, Emma covers and guest edits this issue of Wonderland. She lounges around in a glamourous pink haven, becomes a fairy princess, AND shares a soda with her Noah co-star Douglas Booth. If these aren’t #goals 4 u then…*hair flip/information desk emoji*
Lea Michele – Teen Vogue March 2014

A beautiful cover accompanied by a cover story interview by Lea’s IRL BFF Jonathan Groff, it was a smart and humble way to both touch upon the passing of Cory Monteith and discuss Lea’s future (namely as a solo artist). We <3 u Lea even though personal opinion has me thinking Glee really doesn’t need another season…
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Rolling Stone March 2014

R.I.P. Thank you for your movies. (And seriously, do yourself a favour if you haven’t already and watch Mockingjay – Part 1. It’s not for everyone, and you’ll need to watch it anyway in order to watch Part 2, but Hoffman is absolutely amazing in it.)
Kim Kardashian & Kanye West – Vogue April 2014

Duh. (When is North West’s cover gonna drop?)

R.I.P. Thank you for your movies.
Tavi Gevison – NYLON September 2014

Tavi Gevinson is really coming to her own: fresh out of high school, Rookie is releasing its third yearbook, and now she’s even on Broadway, in This Is Our Youth alongside Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin. When should we expect her tell-all book???
This cover also marks the new staff flip at NYLON HQ—new editors, new publishers. Puh-lease tell me I wasn’t the only one who noticed this and did a little investigation. While the story itself is a bit controversial, you just can’t h8 on improved content and a fresher look.
Miley Cyrus – V Magazine Fall 2014

Miley is having one heck of a year, collabing with Jeremy Scott, showing art at Art Basel in Miami, and throwing rave-y birthday parties. U do u gf.

I mean, my internet was defs still working after this cover was dropped, but I’m sure Google analytics went into overdrive at all the new parody images and hashtags.
Kendall Jenner – Dazed Winter 2014

You almost argue that Kendall broke the Internet more than her older sis throughout 2014, and these Dazed covers are a pretty good way to encapsulate a solid year being like, everything and everywhere. So artsy.
Taylor Swift – Wonderland November/December 2014

Still reeling from the amazingness of the Blank Space music video and just T-Swift 1989 domination + her squad in general, this is also another solid cover to round up a great year for Tay. That tan and slicked back hair is definitely going to be a copied all over for summer ’15, and visually, Wonderland’s cover aesthetics are always on point.
Chris Pratt, Ansel Elgort, Shailene Woodley – GQ December 2014

Being called anything “Of the Year” has got to be one of the best compliments in the entertainment industry, and these three breakouts are definitely deserved and on point. Shailene is now pretty much the queen of YA adaptations (The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent, and White Bird in a Blizzard all released this year), Ansel Elgort is one of ~young hollywood’s~ finest breakouts (and one of our #MCMs!) and Chris Pratt finally showed his ability to be a leading man on the big screens after his Guardians of the Galaxy performance. These simple, classic GQ covers need little else than these faces to encapsulate a pretty intense year for movies.
