#FORAFORAVER: Goodbye (For Now)

Where 2 begin? Well, a few digits tacked on2 the end of that “2” is probably a good starting point – bringing us to 2012: The year that I started at FORA, or bringing us to 2014: The year that I’m donning a braid-up and blasting Vitamin C’s ‘Graduation’ song (whilst subbing in “friends forever” with “friends FORAFORAVER“.

Yes, pals, I am shedding multiple and consecutive tears as I depart into a fiery sunset (or, more appropriately/inappropriately, an alleyway in TJ, a la Season 1 of The O.C), as I say ~goodbye~, ~TTYL~, ~peace~, etc. **If that O.C. ref is the scenario of our (collective) choosing, I, of course, would be Ryan (the resemblance, I’m told, is uncanny), and my team would be Marissa (read: the people that mean so much to me but rely on me to rescue them in times of danger and pressing uncertainty (eg: snack shortages etc.)).**

I acknowledge the fact that editors rarely get the privilege of saying “bye”, but despite what my Linkedin profile says, I’m just a girl who likes hanging out, talking about boys, and having lone dance parties in the studio late into the night. Yes, FORA has been my truuuu luvvvv for the past couple of years, but I’ve realized that as fun as publishing c00l content/organizing fun shoots/tweeting @ u/having pizza parties is, the most rewarding part of this job has been watching FORA evolve into something that is truly a reflection of the individuals who have worked on it over the years.

Pardon the dramatic tone to this post: I promise it gets extremely fun soon. See, I’ve been trying this thing where I try to write poetically – secretly hoping that you guys are sitting on the other side of the WWW hanging on to my every word/also crying. The prospect of the aforementioned gives me a sense of validation: maybe I am serious writer(?) (even though I’m really just a graphic design grad with a penchant for selfies). Anyway – time for a #segue (not to be confused with Segway®) – because with all that said, a dedicated post to me/my life/my attempts at being poetic is pretty one-dimensional. I’ve therefore decided to compile a sweet and gentle roundup of my favourite FORA moments/projects over the past 2.5 years, documented via personal snapzzzz that I’ve collected along the way. Enjoy it. Revel in it. Grab a tissue, your bae, your dog, and a bag of #rare Hot Cheetos. It is time. Let’s proceed.

Summer Encounters

PROJECT SUMMARY: Above all, FORA was a catalyst for making new friends. After all, as I once tweeted, “Sometimes, if you want to be someone’s friend, all you’ve gotta do is ask“.

RELEVANT ANECDOTE: After being moderate email #besties with Jenn, I asked her to come thru and do a lil shoot with Bianca and I during her few vacay daiz in Toronto. We ended up shooting in-studio, and then making a series of elaborate GIFs based off of her ~dReaM sUmmEr VaCaTiOn dEsTinatiOnz~. This was such a fun project because there’s nothing better than animated GIFs, safari animals, Jenn’s face, and an afternoon filled with Miss Vicky’s original chips and Ahi Tuna Clubs at Joey Eaton Centre.

TAKEAWAY: MTV FORA can bring you together with friends that you made on the Internet.

Prom ’14

PROJECT SUMMARY: An unconventional prom with a killer team. Lessons in colour theory: one of few takeaways from design school.

RELEVANT ANECDOTE: Not too uncommon, but the night before we shoot I monitored a delirious 12am styling session in the stu with stylist Skye Kelton and Jen C. Surrounded by bags and bags of sparkly/glittery/#textural garments, I observed as Jen, notoriously decked out in #FFF to #000, donned all of the crazy outfits from the shoot (for the sake of Skye’s styling notes).
Jen in a frilly pink outfit is a visual I will never let myself FORAGET.

TAKEAWAY: MTV FORA can provide you with subjectively incriminating sartorial content, ft. your colour-conservative friends.

Face Time With FORA

RELEVANT ANECDOTE: Once again, this is just another Jen story, but one we were sitting around the stu talking about Josh Hartnett, because…why WOULDN’T we be sitting around the stu talking about the (ever-relevant) Josh Hartnett?!

The conversation, I’m sure, went something like this:

DANI: Wouldn’t it be funny if we did a dedicated post to Josh Hartnett?
JEN: Yeah!
DANI: We should write poems.
JEN: Yeah!
DANI: Like, haikus about his, like, face.
JEN: Yeah!

Jen thus came up with the genius name that is “FACE TIME WITH FORA”: something both appropriate in terms of subject matter also appropriate in terms of technology (S/O Apple). Through FTWF, a large group of us – including Anonymous Straight Male Ghost Writer – realized that poetry re: boys might actually be a prosperous in the job department.

TAKEAWAY: MTV FORA can teach you things about yourself that you would’ve otherwise never discovered.

A Cool Skateboard DIY

PROJECT SUMMARY: What better way to travel back to school than with a friend on a silver-leafed skateboard?! This deck might’ve not been the most practical, but WHATEVER FORAVER.

RELEVANT ANECDOTE: When I began planning this project in August, I was hanging out with this guy who recently copped a pair of roller blades. While he wasn’t actively using them, he owned them: and that was enough for me. Serendipitously, Jen and I had been also talking about the prospect of acquiring scooters and riding them to work because #cute and also #throwback.
However, since both bladez and razerz (get it? Razer scooters?) aren’t necessarily as…widely “accepted” as a skateboard (/I’m eternally stuck in a skater boy phase), I decided that decorating a deck would be better received by the general public. After all, people like quirky, but they also like realistic. (Y)

TAKEAWAY: MTV FORA can instil an inherent sense of practicality but can still give you the opportunity to be different and on #trend (in life, and also when yr headed back to educational institutions).

Becoming Besties With Chloe Moretz

PROJECT SUMMARY: One of the first articles that I wrote for FORA post-internship was 8 Things Chloe Moretz And I Could Do If We Were Best Friends. I’m not really sure what compelled me to this. TBH, I have an overwhelming suspicion that it was just because I thought she was pretty.

RELEVANT ANECDOTE: A couple of hours after I hit publish on this post, Liz Trinnear texted me saying she had sent Chloe the article. I wept.

WEPT!!!

TAKEAWAY: MTV FORA can teach you that your capacity to be creepy is probably much greater than you could’ve ever anticipated.

Phoebe + Audrey

PROJECT SUMMARY: I think one of the first things Phoebe and I bonded over was our long-standing mutual love/respect for Audrey Kitching. I’ve since had the pleasure of working with Phoebe on a few projects, but this day in July was definitely the most unforgettable.

RELEVANT ANECDOTE: The original concept for this shoot was indoors/outdoors, outdoors/indoors – that meaning that the first set would bring the indoors to the outdoors, and the second set would bring the outdoors to the indoors. Get it? Anyway. For the indoors/outdoors set, my team lugged the backdrop stands and paper roll outside and set up everything to the point where there were literal tears in my eyes because everything was so beautiful. Unfortunately, it was a windy day…so the paper ripped and glass things shattered and the vegan cupcakes were almost obliterated.

TAKEAWAY: MTV FORA can make your/Phoebe Dykstra’s dreams come tru, even through hardships brought on by aggressive wind tunnels!!!

Honourable Mentions

+ That time I wrote about my New York bae-ff LOL #sneaky
+ That time Anna Lunoe drew me her dream pants

TO CONCLUDE

FORA has taught me many things. One being that I should date a man with a bun (check). Another being that I should always wash my face (thanks Clean & Clear). But mostly, FORA has taught me the importance of teamwork – because in this day and age, as independent as you think you are, you really can’t do anything alone.

Thanks to Leeor for being the OG (of FORA/everything). Thanks to Max for being the lone boy on our team through it all. Thanks to Dani Rey for mixtapes upon mixtapes and just generally making my day-to-day a lot happier. Thanks to Jen and Rosanna for migrating from the West to the East, assimilating yourselves into my friend group, and changing all of our lives for the better. Thanks to Josh Schwartz and the cast of The O.C. for inspiring me/shaping me into who I am today. Thanks to Clean & Clear for letting us do everything we’ve wanted to do for the past 5 years. And, of course, thanks to the squad at MTV for graciously taking back the torch and continuing FORA into the new year/#foraver etc.

And to everyone else – those who I’ve had the privilege of meeting, working with, hanging out with, and living with (I’m looking at you, Vanessa) over the past couple of years – THANK YOU.

In the wise words of Ethan Craft: You rock, don’t ever change.

NOTE: It’s important to reiterate that this isn’t a goodbye to FORA. Keep it bookmarked, continue to share your favourite articles with your mom, “like” pictures on Instagram, tweet funny anecdotes, think of us when you eat a snack or see a JKz cat etc. I might be ~moving on~ but I know I’ll still be doing all of the aforementioned!

So while FORA might’ve just been the prologue of what’s to come for me, feel free to join me on my new adventures by keeping track of my whereabouts on Instagram.
Until next time: TTYL! #FORAFORAVER.
